THE CLUB FOUNDATION AWARDS SIX STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS
Alexandria. VA - August 8, 2003
 
The Club Foundation is pleased to announce the following recipients of its student scholarships for the 2003-2004 academic year: Thomas Brinson, Florida State University; Bryan Fisher, Portland State University; Lindsey Hayford, Boston University; Mona Olsen, Cornell University; Valerie Price, Florida State University; and Jason Wedl, University of Wisconsin-Stout.

The Club Foundation awards student scholarships annually to those individuals actively pursuing a managerial career in the private club industry. Scholarship recipients are selected by The Club Foundation Allocation Committee (CFAC) and subsequently approved by its Board of Governors.

Thomas Brinson, a senior at Florida State University, is majoring in Professional Golf Management/Hospitality Administration. Brinson was elected as the 2003-2004 president of the university's CMAA student chapter, a position he also held in 2002-2003. Brinson's most remarkable achievement lies in the fact that he is the founder and chairman of the Dedman School of Hospitality's Inter-Organizational Committee. The membership of this committee includes the presidents from all five of the student clubs within the hospitality department.

Bryan Fisher, a junior attending Portland State University, is majoring in Finance and (more) General Management. Fisher is involved with the Club Managers of Oregon and his responsibilities include helping the secretary with mailings, letters, minutes and education. Fisher currently works full time as the Student Assistant Manager at Waverly Country Club. Other activities include volunteering as a foster care provider for twins and spending two days a week as a big brother and mentor. Fisher's career goal is to be a general manager of a private golf and country club.

Lindsey Hayford, a senior at Boston University, is majoring in Hotel Administration with a minor in Accounting. Hayford was the 2002-2003 treasurer for the Diner's Club and a member of the Eta Sigma Delta Hospitality Management Honor Society. Other activities included volunteering with the Siblings Program as a mentor for an elementary school student and as an accounting tutor for financial and managerial accounting.

Mona Olsen, a senior attending Cornell University, is majoring in Hospitality Management with a minor in Hospitality Technology. Olsen is an active member of the university's CMAA student chapter and was elected as its 2003-2004 president. She also participates in the Hotel School Ambassador program and is a volunteer for ėSpringtime in the Park.î Other notable accomplishments include membership in the Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals, Ye Hosts Honorary Society and the Golden Key International Honor Society.

Valerie Price, a senior attending Florida State University, is majoring in Hospitality Administration. Price is very involved with the university's CMAA student chapter and was elected as its 2003-2004 president. In addition to her student chapter activities, Price volunteers as a Note Taker & Managerial Accounting Tutor with the Student Disabilities Resource Center (more) and serves as a Girl Scout Troop Leader. Her career goals include attaining the Certified Club Manager (CCM) designation within four years and owning a non-equity boat and yacht club.

Jason Wedl, a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, is majoring in Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management with a minor in History. Wedl has been the president of the university's CMAA student chapter since 2002 and previously held the position of treasurer. He spent the 2002-2003 academic year as a teaching assistant in the Food Production Laboratory where some of his responsibilities included giving lectures, planning menus and developing recipes. Wedl enjoys the many diverse aspects of the private club industry is looking forward to a challenging career.

The Club Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, was established by CMAA in 1988. Its mission is to raise funds to financially support the professional development of club managers through education, training and research initiatives.
