Karen Peterson Bio

CMAA Conference Honolulu March 1, 2006

I grew up as the oldest of seven children on a dairy farm in Washington state and would never have guessed I would end up working in the private club industry!  While my two children were young, I operated a home based bookkeeping business, coached Little League and volunteered for the high school golf team. I accepted an opportunity to work as a bookkeeper for a management firm that managed the public course where I live. I thought I had found my dream job – until I discovered the Club industry!

I was hired as a bookkeeper at Inglewood Golf Club in Kenmore Washington in 2000, and quickly found my niche with Membership and HR.  I joined the Evergreen Chapter of CMAA in 2001 and have found the education and the contacts at our chapter to be invaluable.

The daily interactions with members are just part of what makes my job so ideal.  In the course of a day, I meet prospective members, get better acquainted with new members, check the pulse of existing members and satisfy the bookkeeper in me by taking care of Human Resources and payroll for our club. And that’s in addition to wonderful meals, a caring staff and a beautiful course and clubhouse.

Thank you to the Foundation and the Committee and everyone who encouraged me to apply for this Scholarship. I am excited to continue my education and enhance my ‘dream job’ through the certification process.
