Student Scholars Honored
The 2006 Student Scholars were honored
at the annual Student Awards Breakfast and Orientation
held during CMAA’s
79th World Conference on Club Management. This year The Club
Foundation was pleased to award six scholarships for the
2006-2007 academic year: Richard Avery, University
of Nevada-Las Vegas, Las Vegas, NV; Kristin Jessee, Purdue
University, Charleston, SC; Jeffrey Chen, Michigan State
University, East Lansing, MI; Seth Franklin, University of
Nevada-Las Vegas, Las Vegas, NV; Joe Madison, Ferris State
University, Ada, MI; and Samantha Sugarman, Cornell University,
New York, NY.
Mr. Luke O’Boyle, CCM, a long time supporter of The
Club Foundation and a former CMAA Student member, addressed
the student membership during the breakfast. He emphasized
the importance of education and encouraged all students to
take advantage of the scholarships and grants offered by
The Club Foundation and the educational opportunities available
through CMAA. He commended the student scholars on
their outstanding academic excellence and, on behalf of The
Club Foundation; he presented each recipient with a monogrammed
duffel bag.
Richard Avery is currently a junior
at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and is majoring
in Hospitality Management with a minor in Club Management. Mr. Avery is an active
member of the university’s CMAA student chapter and
is currently serving as the Chapter President. He has
also served as the Vice President and Secretary/Treasurer.
He has worked at the Nakoma Golf Club and The Beach Club.
Kristin Jessee is a senior at Purdue
University majoring in Hospitality and Tourism Management.
She is the current student chapter President and has served
as Secretary and Vice President of Fundraising. Ms. Jessee
is a member of Eta Sigma Delta - an international honor
society that recognizes exceptional academic achievement
among hospitality and tourism students. She also
is a member of the Purdue Ballroom Dance Club and the Sigma
Kappa sorority. Kristin has worked at Philadelphia Cricket
Club and Snee Farm Country Club.
Jeffrey Chen is currently a senior
at Michigan State University majoring in Hospitality Business. He serves as the
current student chapter President and has served as the Vice
President, as well. Mr. Chen is a Student Member of Society
of Food Service Management and National Society of Collegiate
Scholars. He has worked at Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht
Club and the Tournament Players Club of Michigan
Seth Franklin is currently a senior
at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He is majoring in Hotel Administration
with a minor in Club Management. Mr. Franklin has served
as Student Chapter President and is a member of Alpha Epsilon
Pi social fraternity. Has worked at Southern Highlands
Golf Club, Wakonda Club, Exmoor Country Club.
Joseph M. Madison is currently a
senior at Ferris State University. He is majoring in Resort
Management with a minor in Club Management, Restaurant/Hotel. He has served
as CMAA student chapter President. Mr. Madison is a
Member of Eta Sigma Delta; served as secretary in 05-06,
a Member of Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals
(HFTP), and Ferris State University Student Government, Division
of Finance. He has worked at Ostego Club.
Samantha Sugarman is currently a
senior at Cornell University. She has served as President
of CMAA Student Chapter. Ms. Sugarman is a Member and Treasurer
for Hotel School Student Ambassadors (06-07), Treasurer
for Students’ Committee
for Continuous Improvement (spring 06), Vice President Industry
Relations – Cornell University Spa Association (spring
06), Kappa Alpha Theta sorority – Convention Awards
Chairman, and Marketing and Membership Intern – The
Cornell Club.
The Club Foundation grants student
scholarships annually to those individuals actively pursuing
a managerial career in the private club industry. All scholarship awards
are made at the recommendation of The Club Foundation Allocation
Committee (CFAC) and approved by The Club Foundation Board
of Governors. CFAC makes its nominations based on the
following criteria:
- An essay detailing both the applicant’s
career objectives and demonstrated interest in club management;
- Grade point average;
- Work experience in private clubs;
- Recommendation from a college advisor/professor and club
manager; and
- Industry related activities.
Since 1988, there have been more than 130 scholarships awarded
totaling more than $200,000.
The Club Foundation, a 501(c) (3) organization,
was established by CMAA in 1988. Its mission is to raise
funds to financially support the professional development
of club managers through education, training and research
initiatives. The Joe Perdue Scholarship program
is just one of the many ways that the Foundation fulfills
its mission.
