Scholars Honored
The 2004 Student Scholars
were honored at the annual Student Awards Breakfast and Orientation
held during CMAA’s 78th World Conference on Club
Management on Sunday, February 27, 2005. This year
The Club Foundation was pleased to award eight scholarships
for the 2004-2005 academic year: Heather Freund, Purdue
University; Richelle Friedrich, University of South Carolina;
Lindsay Meidenbaur, University of Delaware; Scott Ninemeier,
Michigan State University; Ashley Saur, Michigan State University;
Ashley Stelter, University of Wisconsin-Stout; Ryan
Taraskiewicz, Florida State University; and Laura Weldon,
University of Missouri-Columbia.

Mr. G. Mead Grady, CCM,
a long time supporter of The Club Foundation and its mission,
addressed the student members during the breakfast. He
emphasized the importance of education and encouraged all
students to take advantage of the scholarships and grants
offered by The Club Foundation and the educational opportunities
available through CMAA. He commended the student scholars
on their outstanding academic excellence and, on behalf of
The Club Foundation, Mr. Grady presented each recipient with
a watch which was engraved on the back with the words “Club
Foundation Scholar 2004.”
Heather Freund is currently
a senior at Purdue University and is majoring in Hospitality
and Tourism Management. Ms. Freund is an active member
of the university’s CMAA student chapter and has been
elected its 2004-2005 president. She previously held
the positions of secretary and vice president. Other
activities included participating on the HTM Career Day Executive
Board, being a teacher’s assistant and receiving the
Servsafe certification.
Richelle Friedrich, a
University of South Carolina senior, is majoring in Hotel,
Restaurant and Tourism Management. Ms. Friedrich is
past vice president for the CMAA student chapter, a member
of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority and served as secretary for the
Hotel, Restaurant, Institution Management Consulting Group. Moreover,
she has been the recipient of various awards including the
National Society of Collegiate Scholars, the Golden Key Honorary
Society and the Alpha Lambda Delta Honorary Society.
Lindsay Meidenbauer is
a senior attending the University of Delaware and is majoring
in Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management with a
minor in Business Administration. Ms. Meidenbauer has
been a member the CMAA student chapter since 2001. In
addition, she was the chapter’s vice president
in 2003-2004 and will hold the position of president for
the 2004-2005 year. Furthermore, Ms. Meidenbauer is
also affiliated with the HRIM Recreation Club, the Hospitality
Club and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.
Scott Ninemeier, a junior
enrolled at Michigan State University, is majoring in Hospitality
Business. Mr. Ninemeier is president-elect of the CMAA
student chapter and previously held the position of secretary. Additionally,
he is involved with the Michigan State Crew Club and the
Student Alumni Foundation Slapshots (the Spartan
hockey team). Finally, Mr. Ninemeier has been awarded
the prestigious H. William and Elizabeth A. Klare Memorial
Scholarship for three semesters from 2002-2003.
Ashley Saur, a Michigan
State University junior is majoring in Hospitality Business
and Spanish. Ms. Saur is a committed member of the
university’s student chapter where she volunteers at
each BMI session, attends club tours and helps with fundraising
efforts. Ms. Saur also is involved with the Honors
College H-Star, Les Gourmet and as an ambassador for the
Career Gallery. If that is not enough, Ms. Saur has
received numerous awards including the Michigan State University
Merit Award, the H. William and Elizabeth A. Klare Hospitality
Scholarship and the Grand Traverse Area Michigan State University
Alumni Scholarship.
Ashley Stelter is a junior
attending the University of Wisconsin-Stout and majoring
in Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management. Ms. Stelter
is a member of several organizations, including the CMAA
student chapter, the UW-Stout Academic Honor Society and
the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Furthermore, she
is a beneficiary of the 4-Star Chancellor’s Award,
the Bruckner Scholarship, the President Academic Scholarship
and a scholarship from Nicolet College.
Ryan Taraskiewicz is a
senior at Florida State University majoring in Professional
Golf Management with a minor in Business Administration. Mr.
Taraskiewicz’s calendar is full of assorted activities. He
is the treasurer for the university’s CMAA student
chapter; the secretary for the Professional Golf Management
Club; Director of Supervision for PGM/FSU; as well as a member
of the PGA of America. Despite his various commitments,
he has managed to appear on the dean’s list for five
consecutive semesters.
Laura Weldon, a University
of Missouri-Columbia junior, is majoring in Hotel and Restaurant
Management with a minor in Business. Ms. Weldon is
dedicated to the hospitality profession as evidenced her
participation in campus activities. She has been the
president of the university’s CMAA student chapter
since 2003 and formerly held the position of treasurer/secretary. She
was also the Hospitality Managers Association president and
a representative for the College of Agriculture Food and
Natural Resources Student Government. Finally, Ms.
Weldon has been honored with innumerable scholarships from
groups such as the National Restaurant Association, Mid-America
Chapter and the Greater KC Hotel and Lodging Association.
The Club Foundation grants
student scholarships annually to those individuals actively
pursuing a managerial career in the private club industry. All
scholarship awards are made at the recommendation of The
Club Foundation Allocation Committee (CFAC) and approved
by The Club Foundation Board of Governors. CFAC makes
its nominations based on the following criteria:
- An essay detailing both the applicant’s
career objectives and demonstrated interest in club management;
- Grade point average;
- Work experience in private clubs;
- Recommendation from a college advisor/professor
and club manager; and
- Industry related activities.
Since 1988, there have
been 124 scholarships awarded totaling $190,350.
The Club Foundation, a
501(c)(3) organization, was established by CMAA in 1988.
Its mission is to raise funds to financially support the
professional development of club managers through education,
training and research initiatives. The Student Scholarship
program is just one of the many ways that the Foundation
fulfills its mission. |
